The Prison

Before one can escape from prison, they must realize they are a prisoner. It took me nearly forty years to discover I was confined in a prison of lies. This is the greatest trick of religious faith—convincing the faithful they are free.

If you had approached me ten years ago and told me I was a prisoner to my faith, first I would have bristled, and then I would have immediately wanted to debate the issue. If you had engaged, no matter what arguments you threw at me I’m certain I would have considered myself the victor.

Now that I’ve escaped my prison, I’d like to explain how this sort of prison works. So far, my efforts have fallen short, so I won’t be explaining the prison in my own words. Fortunately, I stumbled across a brilliant article that manages to accomplish perfectly what I was unable to. Many thanks to Dale O’Neal for producing this eloquent piece: The Making and Unmaking of a Christian Zealot
